THE "RED - MED CANAL"
The literal translation for “Stitching Line” in Hebrew (the official language in Israel) means “Border” in English. In this translation lies the main conceptual drive for the project, which can be summarized with central question: How can national borders architecture be reprogrammed and transformed in order to act as “connectors” in areas of conflict? As a response, the “MED-RED CANAL” proposes a physical boundary, which unfolds necessity security measures while also generating a number of distinct opportunities for societies from all surrounding countries to come together and interact based on new evolving economic interests. The project focuses on a specific geographic area in the middle East, running along the Border of Egypt, Israel and Gaza. Conceived as a large-scale infrastructural project, combining shipping canals railway systems, and transportation tunnels, as a new aerial platform for new areal behavior, thus, new regional politics.
The MED-RED connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea (Gulf of Aqaba). The fluctuating width of the water canal system creates a synthetic nation free island, which utilized with various programs from freeports to leisure zones, that encourage global and local exchange in the region. Med-Red Canal articulates a counter- narrative to the adversarial notion of “border” as a separator by “stitching” together territories in ways that create common points of interest and use.
